AA Insurance

Improving connections

AA Insurance was a key project of 2017 while I was Senior Designer and Workplace Strategist at Stack, specialists in workplace strategy, design and project management in New Zealand. My role was to work in partnership with the lead designer and the client to develop the workplace strategy and design concept. We were challenged to deliver the outputs in a very short time frame - mission accomplished with a very satisfied client!  Their 2018 Staff Engagement Survey returned higher results than any previous year, with many positive comments about the new space. This is an impressive result considering AA Insurance have consistently had a very good level of staff engagement over the past 10 years.

Bread PR

"Best Work Environment" 2015

Based in Aberdeen, Scotland, Bread Public Relations had outgrown its existing premises and was seeking a new head office which would convey its company style and improve productivity. The leadership at Bread wanted to avoid ‘design cliches’ but not feel too corporate. It was critical that their often conservative clients should never feel uncomfortable in the space. My role encompassed the full scope from workplace strategy and concept through detailed plans and consents, sourcing and managing contractors for fit-out, and furnishing. The project was a huge success, staff love their new office, and clients often request to work there or use the Boardroom for their own meetings. As a result of creating a workspace the staff and clients loved, we received the “Best Work Environment” category in the Business Insider Employer of the Year awards 2015.

PD&MS Group

A new HQ during an industry crisis

PD&MS Group had embarked on a prestigious new HQ on the banks of the River Dee in Aberdeen, Europe's Oil Capital. Early in the development, the oil price crash hit the industry. While PD&MS Group skilfully manoeuvred the challenges to their business, the purpose and scale of the new HQ had to be redefined.

As the interior fit-out phase loomed, the client was keen to inject creativity and original thinking into the project. They contacted me to explore my ideas and brought me in just prior to tender issue for the fitout phase. Schedule and cost were becoming an issue, and key relationships with the main contractors becoming strained by the circumstances. My role was two-fold: conceiving a great workspace, and helping the client and project management understand each other’s needs and concerns.

The project was successfully delivered on time and within the reduced budget. PD&MS group were so happy with the outcome that I was brought back in 2017 to design an additional space for a further 110 employees.

Responsible Care

Methanex are a global gas company with an emphasis on being safe, reliable and high performance, particularly in terms of customer response and pursuit of market opportunity.  For their new offices in Auckland, they were seeking a space that  staff could feel proud of and that conveys the company commitment to its core values: Respect, Professionalism, Trust, Integrity.

As Lead Designer on this project while working for Stack Business Interiors, I was responsible for leading the full scope from clarifying the brief, through concept development, detailed design, and project delivery, working closely with the client and the support of the Stack technical and project management teams.

Seeking to draw staff out of their offices to collaborate, the imperative was to create common areas that are inviting and conducive to talking together and working together, A feature timber leaner was designed, around which staff could gather to share work and discuss openly.  The café was also a key area, with the aim of creating a space for socialising, relaxing, and sharing the wonderful views from their new premises.
